Special Study Programs:
Classrooms at Play and Learn are nurturing, educational environments equipped with a wide variety of age-appropriate supplies and equipment designed to encourage children to learn at their own pace and in their own unique way. We foster group and individual activities which focus on creativity, socialization, and skills development through exploration and discovery.
Infants – Baby Bears
Our infant program provides care and early childhood education for children ages 6 weeks to 18 months. Infants at Play and Learn enjoy a nurturing and loving environment in which to grow and explore. We work to create infant spaces that foster each infant’s motor skills, cognitive development, and social/emotional growth. At Play and Learn each infant receives daily individualized care and attention. Throughout the day our nurturing and professional caregivers follow each infant’s personal schedule of napping, eating, and diapering while making time during routine activities to talk, sing, read, play, and cuddle. We keep parents informed with Infant Daily Sheets which detail the activities of each child’s day.
Toddlers – Elmos
Our toddler program provides care and early childhood education for children ages 18 months to 2 ˝ years. Toddlers at Play and Learn experience their world through exploration and engage in carefully planned hands-on learning activities designed to develop communication skills, large and fine motor skills, coordination, confidence, and socialization. Throughout the day our nurturing and professional teachers provide toddlers opportunities for playing, singing, dancing, and participating in creative art, sensory activities, and story times. The toddler staff is happy to assist you with your child throughout the toilet training stage when you feel your child is ready. We keep parents informed with Daily Reports which detail the activities of each child’s day. A daily schedule, weekly lesson plan, and monthly calendar are posted on the toddler room parent board.
Younger Preschool – Grovers and Big Birds
Our younger preschool program provides care and early childhood education for children ages 2 ˝ years to 3 ˝ years who are fully toilet-trained or are in the process of being toilet trained. At Play and Learn young preschoolers participate in a hands-on program that keeps the children actively involved while exploring a weekly theme. Preschoolers can choose from a variety of developmentally appropriate learning centers as they begin to make choices and gain independence. Cognitive skills are encouraged through letter, number, and shape recognition. Classroom activities are designed to encourage and build positive social interactions, sharing, and taking turns; problem solving; language development; creativity; and self-esteem. Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress with Daily Reports and periodic parent conferences. A daily schedule, weekly lesson plan, and monthly calendar are posted on the Big Birds’ parent board.
Older Preschool – Cookie Monsters
Our preschool program provides care and early childhood education for children ages 3 ˝ years to 4 ˝ years. At Play and Learn preschoolers explore a weekly theme and participate in a hands-on program that encourages growth and development in all areas: physical, social/emotional, and cognitive. Preschoolers can independently choose from a variety of developmentally appropriate learning centers. Classroom activities are designed to encourage and build positive social interactions, sharing, and taking turns; problem solving; language development; creativity; and self-esteem. Preschoolers learn letters and sounds, colors and shapes, and number concepts. Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress with Daily Reports and periodic parent conferences. A daily schedule, weekly lesson plan, and monthly calendar are posted on the Cookie Monsters’ parent board.
Pre-Kindergarten – Kermits
Our pre-kindergarten program provides care, early childhood education, and kindergarten readiness for children ages 4 ˝ years to 5 ˝ years. Each of our experienced teachers will plan and implement activities in their individual areas of expertise, working with the children in small groups to give them more specialized training.
At Play and Learn our pre-kindergartners explore a weekly theme and participate in a hands-on program that encourages physical, social/emotional, and cognitive growth and development while working to prepare children to enter kindergarten. Pre-kindergartners can independently choose from a variety of developmentally appropriate learning centers and are encouraged to work independently as well as in groups. Classroom activities are designed to build socialization, communication, and problem solving skills. Language arts, math, science, sensory art, and reading readiness are all a part of the pre-kindergarten program. Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress with Daily Reports and periodic parent conferences. Introduction/Description:
Opened in 1980 as a community outreach by Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Play and Learn is a non-profit child care center committed to providing quality early childhood care and education to children ages six weeks through ten years. Our goal is to provide your child with stimulating and enjoyable educational experiences in a loving, Christian environment.
Play and Learn is proud to have such a caring and wonderful staff. The majority of our staff members have been a part of our Center family for multiple years. The staff members’ lengthy tenures (average five to ten years) combined with a low staff turnover rate are great assets to our Center and a testament to the staff members’ commitment and dedication to the children and their families.

Childcare Philosophy:
It is our philosophy that the development of the individual as a whole being is attained through the enrichment of the social, intellectual, and spiritual aspects of his/her nature. Our philosophy comes from the Christian commitment of Gethsemane Lutheran Church which encourages the celebration of life through love, respect, caring, and sharing. Thus, the staff at Play and Learn strives daily to promote the development of a healthy, inquisitive, and self-confident child that is prepared for the social and mental requirements of education and is nurtured in a warm, nurturing, and secure environment in which love for Jesus Christ and for others is taught and shared.
We believe children are unique individuals who grow and develop at their own pace with their own strengths, needs, and interests. The Center offers a variety of learning opportunities generated from these needs and interests. Many choices are provided within a carefully arranged structure. Learning through play and actual experiences is a cornerstone of the program.
