Director Name & Bio:
Dear Friend of Columbus Montessori,
Welcome to Columbus Montessori Education Center! We are a center that provides infant, toddler, preschool, and elementary education for children ages six weeks through sixth grade. In addition, we also provide Montessori certification classes for adults making us a full-service center.
Dr. Montessori developed her educational philosophy as a result of observations and discoveries she made of the ways in which children learn. She found that they learn in distinctly different ways at different stages of development. She formulated an educational program to meet the particular needs of the child at whatever stage of development, to help him/her reach his/her fullest potential.
Sincerely,
Lenn Turner

Children’s House Program for Preschoolers, Ages 3-6 Years
Children’s House, a term coined by Dr. Montessori for preschool and kindergarten aged children, serves children aged three through six years. At Columbus Montessori we strive to foster an individualized love of learning in each child. Children in the program have the opportunity to choose their own work within limits guided by skilled Montessorians, in a beautiful environment rich with developmentally appropriate and fascinating learning materials. We value the key concepts for children’s learning at this age that are the development of concentration, coordination, self-discipline, order, independence, and respect.
Our full-time program is uniquely structured so that children experience the Montessori curriculum throughout the day in a multi-aged environment. Each class offers a child-to-teacher ratio of 9-to-1 in a rich personal learning environment based on each child’s individual needs. Part day options are available.
The beautifully prepared learning environments offer opportunities for children to make choices and learn at their own pace. A respectful community of young learners come together daily to explore language arts, mathematics, science, geography, art, movement, and music. Through multi-aged classrooms, the children develop strong leadership skills and independence, build relationships with peers and teachers, and learn to care for their own environment. Practicing socialization skills, developing good interpersonal problem solving skills and learning attitudes of grace and courtesy are also important goals. At Columbus Montessori we value the child as a whole being, nurturing the development of the mind and spirit to provide a strong foundation for life.

Introduction/Description:
Since its inception in 1984, Columbus Montessori Education Center has experienced tremendous growth. Beginning in a corner of Redeemer Lutheran Church with a single classroom of 17 children, the school now operates a 27,000-square-foot building located on seven acres of land outside of downtown Columbus. Amid the school’s growth and expansion, Columbus Montessori has remained true to its founding mission of providing a high-quality Montessori learning experience for children from birth through sixth grade.
The school serves a culturally and socio-economically diverse student population. The administration and staff value positive school-home relationships and active community involvement. Most of our teachers hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, Montessori credentials, or both. These qualities make Columbus Montessori a truly unique learning environment.

Childcare Philosophy:
Although Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was a pioneer in the field of education, she was trained as a physician, not a teacher. Free of educational doctrine and theory, she instead relied upon a holistic, multidisciplinary background in medicine, psychology, philosophy, and anthropology in her research with children.
Through her scientific observations of children, Montessori made a dramatic discovery — “the child’s true normal nature” — more capable, competent and potent than traditionally believed. Montessori observed that in an environment which allows for purposeful, self-directed activity, children become spontaneously absorbed in self-selected work, appearing calm and refreshed when complete. Repeated experiences of “spontaneous concentration” transform the child’s personality to one of joy, tranquility, compassion, and curiosity; one that is capable of profound engagement and concentration! Montessori believed this to be the “normal” state of psychic health, because she observed this phenomenon with children throughout the world.
When children are freed from inner turmoil and distraction, an intrinsic dynamic drive towards growth and development propels them to “self-construct” through movement, exploration, and discovery of their environment. With the same drive for life which animates the orientation of leaves towards sunlight, children are driven towards growth and learning.

Montessori believed that the child can only become himself through the development of concentration and the will. Three hour work periods are an essential feature of a Montessori classroom. Rather than an arbitrary bell or time limit dictating the amount of time allotted for learning, children are permitted to continue working until they feel complete. Continuous opportunities for repetition educate the child’s hands, and cycles of activities complete the child by enabling him to coordinate his movements and deepen his concentration.
Believing that children construct themselves through personal effort and engagement, the child in the prepared environment, is free to move about and choose activities of his own interest. The prepared environment encourages exploration, movement, and focused activity, because children learn by doing. Montessori classrooms have multi-aged groupings, which reduce competition, provide each learner time to develop relationships with the teacher and one another, as well as to take on the role of both learner and teacher (older students will often give presentations to younger students).
Although the focus of Montessori’s work was on the individual child, the goal of her work encompassed the whole of society. She viewed the spirit of the child as the world’s greatest resource and felt if we wanted to improve the world, we must start by supporting the natural development of the child.
Some general Montessori principles:
Columbus Montessori Jessica Kass Center
First, independence is encouraged:
♥Materials are available on low shelves so children can self initiate work
♥Children are active participants in all care routines
♥The environment is set up in a way that allows children to be successful with minimal adult intervention
Second, respect for self, others, and the environment is stressed:
♥Teachers create a community for beginning socialization skills with children and their peers
♥Children are responsible for cleaning up after themselves at mealtimes and throughout the work cycle, in addition to assisting with practical life opportunities caring for the classroom
♥Teachers are continuous models for respectful interactions
Third, the development of concentration is valued:
♥Materials are presented in a way that entices children. Children actively explore materials so learning is meaningful and attention is sustained.
♥The completion of a full work cycle is supported and encouraged.
♥The schedule of the day is flexible and allows children to work uninterrupted.
♥Children are active participants in complex multiple step processes throughout the day.
