Description

Pratt Institute's Counseling Center is seeking an Associate Director who partners with the Director to design, manage, and continuously improve Center operations and their impact across the campus community. The Associate Director co-leads clinical operations; oversees utilization review, coverage planning, crisis response, and quality improvement; mentors clinical staff, and provides a full range of direct services. The role collaborates broadly with campus partners to advance inclusive, student-centered mental health services aligned with the Institute's Strategic Plan. In addition to these primary duties, the Associate Director supports the Center's training activities by supervising trainees and collaborating on didactic seminars, curriculum, and competency evaluations. The Associate Director is authorized to lead the Center in the Director's absence.

Examples of Duties

Clinical Operations and Quality Management (25%)
  • Co-lead the design and management of Center operations, policies, and procedures; ensure alignment with institutional priorities and best practices in college mental health.
  • Manage utilization review, access/scheduling workflows, and coverage plans to optimize capacity, equity, and continuity of care.
  • Oversee documentation standards, clinical audits, and operational assessments; drive continuous quality improvement using data-informed decision-making.
  • Supervise administrative staff in budget tracking, purchasing, reporting, and daily operational execution.

Crisis Intervention and Risk Management (20%)
  • Lead crisis assessment, intervention, safety planning, post-crisis follow-up, and care coordination; support students-in-crisis until referrals are established.
  • Coordinate after-hours crisis consultation with ProtoCall as needed; refine protocols and communication loops with on-call and campus partners.
  • Serve as a key consultant to campus stakeholders (e.g., Assessment Care Team/BIT, Public Safety, Student Affairs) regarding students of concern; alert staff to relevant public safety incidents.

Direct Clinical Services (10%)
  • Provide time-limited individual counseling, group therapy, and clinical case management for more complex presentations in our undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Conduct psychological evaluations/intakes, diagnostic formulation, disposition, and treatment planning, and referrals to community providers.

Outreach, Prevention, and Groups (10%)
  • Oversee outreach, prevention programs, workshops, and community dialogues in collaboration with Health Promotion, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and other campus partners.
  • Supervise peer-supported and therapy groups that are responsive to student needs.

Training Program Support and Supervision (20%)
  • Provide developmentally attuned clinical supervision to trainees (e.g., externs, interns, postdocs as applicable) across the scope of services, including intake, treatment planning, crisis intervention, short-term therapy, group co-facilitation, and referral practices.
  • Collaborate with staff to plan and deliver didactic seminars, case conferences, and a coherent curriculum that integrates psychodynamic and evidence-based college mental health practices, multicultural counseling, and social justice frameworks.
  • Implement and review competency-based evaluations with clear learning objectives and benchmarks; provide timely feedback, remediation planning, and documentation in accordance with Center policies and relevant regulations.
  • Liaise with trainees' home institutions and, as applicable, ensure supervision hours and documentation meet New York State and professional standards.

Leadership and Collaboration (15%)
  • Mentor clinical and training staff; facilitate case conferences and multidisciplinary discussions to enhance clinical quality and consistency.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, workload balancing, and professional development for clinical and administrative staff.
  • Represent the Center in committees and task forces; serve as Acting Director in the Director's absence.


Qualifications


Education: Doctorate in or masters in social work or doctorate in psychology (clinical, counseling or a related field) is required.

Experience: Three years of administrative and supervisory experience in a college or university counseling center or comparable mental health setting. Postgraduate training in a college or university counseling setting preferred.
Required Skills: Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity addressing
