Physical Review X seeks an Assistant Editor

Physical Review X, a dynamic, broad-scope, and highly selective journal of the American Physical Society, seeks a very motivated physicist with independent research experience and a strong sense of professionalism to join its editorial team as an Assistant Editor.
The primary responsibility of the Assistant Editor is to select, from a large number of received papers, those that meet the journal’s acceptance criteria for publication, by exercising independent professional judgment and judiciously seeking expert input through anonymous peer review. The Assistant Editor is also expected to be an engaging and effective ambassador for the journal to the physics community at large, through personal interactions with researchers at conferences and via site visits. This position can be the beginning of a very rewarding career for an individual who is passionate about physics and learning and who is keen to serve physics and the physics community in a nontraditional way.

The qualified applicant must have both a PhD in physics and postdoctoral experience in an area or a number of areas of physics. Although no area will be categorically excluded from consideration, preference will be given to those research areas that straddle different topics or subfields in physics, in particular, the currently very active field of quantum many-body physics that spans statistical physics, atomic/molecular/optical physics, and quantum information theory.

The applicant should already have a basic understanding of the research-publication process through their own publications. An excellent command of written and spoken English is essential. In addition, we seek the following qualities in the applicant: A keen interest in, and ability for, constantly and efficiently broadening their knowledge of physics beyond the area of their specialization; a capability to make independent and critical judgment of both research papers and expert opinions using that knowledge; analytical decisiveness in decision making; self-discipline in completing daily tasks in the absence of obvious deadlines and also in meeting set deadlines; and an ability to be a team player. Knowledge of physics beyond the applicant’s area(s) of specialization, interest and skills in personal interactions with fellow physicists will be viewed as competitive assets, as will a knack for distilling technical results into an accessible message.

This full-time position is officially located at the APS editorial offices in Ridge, New York, close to Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University and 60 miles from Manhattan. Partial telecommuting could, however, be negotiated. APS offers career stability, a competitive salary and an outstanding benefits package. For general information about the Society and its journals, see www.aps.org; for information about Physical Review X, see http://journals.aps.org/prx/about.

Interested applicants should email edresumes@aps.org attention Daniel Kulp, Editorial Director, and include a CV and a cover letter explaining their interest in the position and salary expectations as well as a sample Popular Summary for a recent physics paper (see http://journals.aps.org/prx for examples of Popular Summaries).
